Mimosas In New York (Yes At 5 A.M! ) As Harry Marries Meghan

So, here I am with my American BFF watching a wedding, and eating and drinking at 5 in the morning. This morning. Here’s why:

Back in the day, royal families in general, and royal weddings in particular were the “bread and butter” of tabloid magazines like the STAR for which I worked. So, more than 30 years ago, I and Judy, my American BFF (who back then was a fellow reporter) opened up the STAR Magazine offices at around 4 in the morning to monitor the office TVs and take notes on a royal wedding.

It was July 23, 1986 and Sarah Ferguson aka Fergie was marrying The Queen’s third child, Prince Andrew (who had previously dated, and almost married, American actress Koo Stark.) Judy reminded me of this a couple of weeks back and suggested we should come full circle and raise our glasses at 5 a.m. to drink to the good health of Prince Harry and his American actress sweetheart, Meghan as they wed this morning.

Good Idea?

I wasn’t sure. Royal weddings aren’t my thing anymore, I said.  I’d paid little attention to this upcoming one. “We’ll have to get up at 4 IN THE MORNING for chrissake’s” I complained. “We can’t start drinking at 4 in the morning!  Anyway who is this Meghan Markle?”  But for a BFF, I felt obliged to at least do a little investigating. And, guess what? One of the very first articles I found was this one In Esquire magazine:

So, okay, maybe we could get up that early in the morning.  I was in. As for how to watch it? It was clear we’d need some solid sustenance as well as champagne. (Especially if we were to pay heed to the small print under the headline.) So, we got to work on a menu.

We Should Have Made The Sandwiches Last Night !

And, here’s some more photos of us prepping, and watching, and drinking, and eating at 5 in the morning.

We’re all set now! Sandwiches, too!

Message to Meghan: Fergie Was Fun

We loved Fergie. She was a tabloid dream: Over the years, after the wedding there was fabulous Fergie, fat Fergie, foot fetishist Fergie, Weight Watchers Fergie, children’s author Fergie, and pay-for-play Fergie (offering to sell access to her husband.) We were happy to see she was invited to Harry and Meghan’s wedding.

Cheers!

  1. Oh, I wish I could have been there with you! I got up to watch, my menu not nearly as elaborate as yours! Coffee and a scone didn’t quite cut it. But watching live was the best! Cheers!

    1. Yes, definitely you needed to add a mimosa or a bellini to the coffee and scone. Either way, the wedding was gorgeous.

  2. A fitting wedding breakfast spread for a glorious wedding. Hope you thoroughly enjoyed the event even at 5am!
